dna test sale

I guess everyone knows already that FamilyTree DNA
(one of the biggest DNA sites) is having a sale on all of their tests.

Most people should be interested in the autosomal dna test called Family Finder.  Autosomal dna can go back five or six generations to match someone (sometimes more).  Your child can go back six generations, and you go back one futher and your parent goes back one generation further than you.

Normally $99 but they've been keeping that at $79 lately,
 now it's only $59.  (plus shipping ??)

The generous people at FamilySearch just e-mailed us to let us know that they've finished scanning our New Jersey records from the New Jersey State Archives! The boxes of microfilms were FedExed back to us today, and the new portable hard drive full of the newly scanned images will be going out in the mail either later today or else early next week.

This means we should be able to start uploading these New Jersey records to the Internet Archive late next week! They'll be free for everyone to use and copy and download -- no restrictions, no copyrights, no logins. Free public data, the way it should be.

(Yes, FamilySearch and all the for-profit genealogy companies we know and love are welcome to re-post the images too, if they want, and maybe start an indexing project? But that's totally up to them.)

If you're wondering, "wait, what New Jersey records are you talking about?" Well, it's the index to 400,000+ records from 1901-1903 (or even through 1914 for the Brides Index). Here's the full backstory with more exciting details:
https://www.reclaimtherecords.org/records-request/5/

We'll let everyone know just as soon as the new images start going online. If everything goes smoothly, the whole set should be posted online to archive.org in the next four weeks, by mid-July.

Browsing the NJ State Archive website

.....  looking for Hudson County records of course.

The title of the page is
"New Jersey State Archives Searchable Catalog".

When you pick the county (only) then hit search, it comes up with 299 records on 20 pages.

Some records are in boxes and others are microfilms.

I think that most of the records are not available even if you go to Trenton.

But if you find something that you're interested in you can call or email them to see if you can "Browse."

Civil War: New Jersey prisoners at Andersonville

The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System currently includes information about Andersonville prison camp in Andersonville, Georgia, (aka Camp Sumter)
where more than 45,000 Union soldiers were confined.

Cruel starvation and exposure caused the deaths of about 13,000 Union prisoners.
Here's the list of 566 New Jersey prisoners or you can do a search.

The original link was very long so I used bitly.com to shorten it.

The photos were found on wikipedia's Andersonville page.
The photos are originally from the Library of Congress.

So your cost will probably be: for $30 your total is $31.57, for $100.00 would be $102.90

Need a volunteer ??

Need someone who can help you GET a record for your

ancestor in another town, county, state or country.

Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness is coming back

online.

Volunteers post listings of how they can help you find

something genealogical from all over the world.

At one time there were over 4000 people volunteering.

Right now there's about 100 volunteers and climbing.

It's practically or is free if the volunteer is going to the

location anyway.  They can charge a reimbursement fee for

gas, copies, printing fees, postage, film or video tape, parking fees, etc. (if they ask for it.)

You can be a requester and a volunteer !!

What can I do as a volunteer?

The purpose of this site is to help others obtain copies of documents, pictures of tombstones, etc., that can not be obtained easily by those who do not live in the area of their ancestors.
Documents could be death records, marriage records, land records, wills, baptismal records from churches, cemetery information in the form of photos of tombstones, military records, obituaries and the list goes on. Of course, all those documents mentioned may or may not be available for copying depending on the location.

See you there, Ed
